The Solar Hot Water Rebate Program
Installing a heat pump hot water system in your home can be a lot
easier for you now, if you are in Australia. The Australian Government,
in order to promote a safe and green environment, has introduced this
offer for a rebate if homeowners purchase a solar water heater. This
offer is a part of the Australian government’s Energy Efficient Homes
Package that was introduced on 3 February 2009.
This rebate will help people of Australia save huge amounts on
electricity and at the same time, it will reduce carbon emission of the
country. Electric water heaters are one of the major causes for
greenhouse gas emissions in the country, and this is why the scheme
comes as a breath of fresh air – literally.
What are the requirements for being eligible?
You can avail this offer or rebate only if you did not get any
government aid to install ceiling insulation through the Home Insulation
Program or the Homeowner Insulation Program.
Your solar heater must be purchased and installed on or after 3 February
2009. You should be replacing an old electric storage hot water system,
for a new solar system. However, if your house was destroyed in the
February 2009 Victorian bushfires, you will be eligible for the rebate;
provided your house is being rebuilt in the same place and you have a
2000 liter rainwater tank installed.
If your solar water system was installed on or after 5 September 2009,
you will be able to get a rebate of $1,000. If it was purchased and
installed before 4 September 2009, you are eligible for a rebate of
$1,600 if you can produce the proof of purchase and installation, along
with the application for the rebate.
No government organizations are eligible for the rebate. However, if you
are an owner and occupier or even if you are a tenant at the address,
you can apply for the rebate – as long as you can show that you live at
the place where the solar heater will be installed.
Your solar or heat pump hot water system will be eligible for at least
20 Renewable Energy Certificates or RECs when it is installed at your
address.
You can apply for the rebate if you are 18 years and above. The
application can be made only after the system has been installed at your
home. While filling up the form, you will need to fill in the following
important personal information:
- The type of system you are installing - solar hot water or heat
pump system
- Your BSB Number
- Your bank account number where your rebate will be deposited
- The date of installation of your new solar or heat pump hot
water system
